Oh no, an extra five steps!

So, the people on the fourth floor of our building moved out months ago, and ever since they left, there has been a heated, un-spoken competition for their parking space. In our parking lot, the higher up you have to go to get home, the closer your spot. Those who live on the first floor are the furthest away, but it’s only about twenty paces or so (total guess, I have a feeling that is about right, though) from the curb to the parking spot. If you have TWO cars, you use visitor parking for the car that doesn’t land in the assigned spot, and walk and extra (GASP) twenty paces or so.

As you probably guessed, the empty spot that belonged to the former residents of the fourth floor is one of the two closest spots for our building. Officially, that spot belongs to no one now, and for a while, it was just sort of ‘first come first serve’. Mike and I never park there because our regular spot isn’t but three spaces down, and whatever, it’s not a big deal to walk a couple extra steps. There are a couple families with more than one vehichle, though, and boy oh boy does it get interesting.

In an effort to save about ten steps, I’ve watched people pull out of the spot they are ALREADY IN to move into the “closer” spot. Am I insane, or is that MORE WORK than just walking to the spot you used to be in?

The Close Spot has become such a point of contention, it’s safe to say whoever does get it by luck or design is the Building Jerk for however long they’re there. Nevermind how many kids they’re lugging, how many vehichles they own, or how often their husband is away. Chances are, someone somewhere is muttering, “That Jerk took The Close Spot, who does he/she think she is?”

God forbid you just count your fucking blessings and deal with whatever spot God gives you.
