Slow Moves
What can I say? When I have nothing to write about except my inability to conceive, I like to play around with my site’s design. Once again, the masthead is done by my buddy Onatopp. Hopefully I won’t get antsy again too soon.
The Soundblox is finally updated fully for August (well lookie-here, it’s pretty much September first), and it has some gems. One of my favorite old Jonathan Richman songs is there, a couple remixes involving Radiohead, and one of my favorite tracks from the new Thee More Shallows cd. The website is pretty simple but it does have a download for a track that was on the first album (available as an export only now).
Additionally, I highly recommend the Jose Gonzalez song. Actually, I recommend the entire album and prove it by plugging it over in the left menu “Enjoying”. [Click on the album cover to order it from Amazon. ] Gonzalez is Swedish and, apparently, hot shit in Sweden. His music is lyric and guitar based, in a sort of Nick Drake sort of way. Actually a Nick Drake comparison is inevitable. “Heartbeats” and “Crosses” actually remind me a bit of Red House Painters early stuff, too. Anywho, Gonzalez’s song “Crosses” was featured on the season finale of The OC, so you know it’s awesome.
I love Sia. She’s gorgeous, and her song “Breathe Me” [featured on Six Feet Under] is amazing. Her site has plenty of downloads, and I have the video here.
Other things to note on the Soundblox are Will Oldham and David Berman live, performing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” and “Smith and Jones Forever” — a Silver Jews hit from yesteryear. There’s also Ted Leo covering Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone”, and a live New Pornographers track.
As a gift, and to celebrate Portastatic’s new album, here is my favorite Portastatic song of all time: “Do You Want to Buy a Bridge? Shit, enjoy DJ Embee (featuring Jose Gonzalez) “Send Someone Away”.
