I’ll admit it

Dooce’s new design startled me, too. Not simply because of the ads (yeah there’s a ton, but whatever. I’m on the Internet, ads are everywhere.), but because of the three-column setup.

I am so used to seeing those two steadfast columns, and so used to knowing exactly where to go to look at what I want to see, the change threw me for a loop. Those little links beneath the header? Took me a good ten minutes to find them.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. Lord knows, I’d probably get death threats if I complained about Dooce and signed my name to it. I’m not complaining, because I have absolutely no vested interest in whether or not she “sells out”. More than anything else, I’m surprised at how much design programs my brain to synthesize certain things. It would be like visitingDrudge and finding a clean, organized design that was easy to navigate.

Shocking, I say!

i don’t mind the ads at all. i know what i’m on her site for, and that’s to read her entry. i click the ads because i know that’s how she pays the bills. people need to chiiiiiiiiilll! it’s just a website! :)

with that said, i think i’m going to add some ads to my blog. maybe it will raise some money to pay for all the stuff that was stolen :(

i agree that dooce shoudl have as many ads as she wants, but i really REALLY don’t like the three column layout — too cluttered and UGLY! i can deal with it, but my OCD is quite bothered by it. heh.

I used to love the three column thing - I convinced myself that it made my life easier to have all those links. I’ve seen some sites that pull it off nicely, but to me the key is keeping such a busy layout as minimalistic as possible. The ads on Dooce don’t bother me as ads, but all the images and different fonts, etc. definitely distract me. Cluttered is exactly the word for it.

I hate the 3 col layout too. I hate the new design but since I am generally hitting the site via the rss I don’t have to actually use the navigation.

It’s too bad it’s so uh… busy (is that the polite term for it?) because I think it would/will throw any new visitors.

Yeah, I’d say busy is a good word for it as well.

I hit it via RSS too, but I have Tbird set up to load the entire page. I’d change it, but I really like to see posts in their context, and I like to know when people change their designs w/o having to click links all day.

But yeah … there’s a lot of stuff going on there. :)

um, i meant to say that my ADD is bothered by the new layout, but i really think it’s both the ADD *and* the OCD! dooce! you’re killing me over here! heh.

dude, i’m all “whatever” bout the ads. and i think its great if she can live off dooce. more fucking power to her.

and the whole concept of “sell out” is so 9th grade. people need to grow the fuck up.

but yeah, cluttered. agreed.
