I know I’m not going to win, and in fact I don’t want to because I’d much rather give someone else a t-shirt, but here’s my shitty mix just because it’s fun. The poll for voting on the mixes is over in the sidebar, and I encourage everyone to at least go skim the song titles - it’s hilarious. We have Frank Stallone, Hulk Hogan, and that baby French rapper in the mix. Hott. Vote for your favorites (or yourself), and have your friends, family and blackmail victims come vote for you as well, so you can claim your t-shirt! I want to be cheesy and thank everyone who took the time to play along with this, you guys are all so awesome. Plus I got a chance to peek in on friends of friends, which is always rad. Oh, Internet. Don’t forget: custom t-shirts by 60 Bugs hang in the balance! If you made a mix and I don’t have it listed in the poll, please send me a link! We’ll vote all week, so there’s time! If you want to add your mix as a late entry, bring it on! I’ll give you until midnight tonight!
Here’s mine:

01 Bryan Adams “Only Thing Looks Good on Me Is You” from Anthology, because who really gives a shit which album it originally appeared on?

02 Onyx “Slam” from Bacdafucup, because anytime you say “Bacdafucup”, you’re either sneezing or referring to Onyx.

03 Rick Astley “Never Gonna Give You Up” from Whenever You Need Somebody, because uh, hello, maybe you’ve heard of him? Rick Fucking Astley?

04 Aaron Carter “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)” from Aaron’s Party (Come Get It), because I wasn’t able to find the mp3 for “My Internet Girl, I Can See Her Voice”. (BTW if you can find that mp3 for me I’ll probably wet myself.)

05 Bette Midler “Wind Beneath My Wings” from Some Craptacular Greatest Hits Collection, I’m Sure, because, well, it’s one of those songs that makes me want to stab my own eyeballs with rusty nails, y’all.

So, did you ever wonder what prompted Michael McDonald to write the song? It had something to do with Hall & Oates and Kenny Loggins, but that’s the only hint I’ll give you. Enjoy, vagina sailors!
Ok so the rest of the internet saw this before me, but watch again even if it’s old news to you. Look at that frog! Beautiful.
Have a great holiday everyone, and keep in mind the deadline for the Shitty Mix Tape submissions is tonight. Tomorrow, I’m putting up a poll and everyone will be able to vote for their favorites. Winner gets a t-shirt designed by Debbie at 60 Bugs!
You know you want to. C’mon. Do it.

Weird playlist today, I think iTunes has something against me some days. All great music, but you know, sometimes a song comes on and you’re like “WTF, iTunes? What have I ever done to you?” Yes, it’s been that kind of day with iTunes. Also, last night it was really getting on my nerves, playing so much Mothersbaugh (again, love it, but sometimes it’s almost painful) I finally finished my Mothersbaugh Wedding Soundtrack just to get it all out of my system.
Quickly, before I post the songs: The Shittiest Mix Tape Challenge has exploded, and there are a ton of awesome submissions. I’ve been talking to Debbie (she makes amazing things, go check it out), and I’m going to buy the winner a custom t-shirt from her, the design clearly stating that you are the king or queen of mix tape making. Want a tshirt? Think you can rock a shitty mix tape better than anyone else? Go here, read the ‘rules’, and link me back to your mix. Beware, there are some doozies. There’s no way I’m going to win.
Ok, on to what the mix for this Friday is, since I’m sure you’re on the edge of your fucking seat about it.
01 Superdrag “Cynicality”, from Regretfully Yours. This album has so many great memories for me each time I hear it. I actually stole this CD with a friend, from a … well, let’s just say it was stolen. But I’ve since purchased it legitimately, once for me and once for a friend. So there.
02 Mitch Hedberg “Koalas”, from Strategic Grill Locations. If you never heard any of his stand-up before he passed away, it’s never too late. “My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana, and I said no, but I want a regular banana later, so … yeah.”
03 Voxtrot “Missing Pieces”, from Raised by Wolves. Austin darlings at their best, check it out!
04 Telepopmusik “Animal Man”, from Genetic World. Dreamy, spacey electronic … rap? You’ve heard them in some Cingular commercials, and this song isn’t really representative of their body of work, but hey, it’s a random shuffle.
05 Willie Nelson “If You Could Touch Her at All”, from Greatest Hits. I recently stole this album off a friend’s external hard drive, and this is the first time this song has popped up randomly. One of my favorite Willie songs, and it would have been my mp3 pick if I could stand to share it.
06 The Stone Roses “She Bangs the Drums”, from The Stone Roses. Ah, memories.
07 Tom Petty “Depending on You”, from Full Moon Fever. I just recently ripped a ton of old CDs from a box and a drawer to the external hard drive, and rediscovered all my Tom Petty. I love this song, but lately Wildflowers has really been punching me in the gut.
08 David Grubbs “You’ll Never Tame Me”, from A Guess at the Riddle. I think people either love or hate Grubbs, but if you’re into Jim O’Rourke or any sort of oblique piano arrangements, you’ll like this, too.
09 Guided By Voices “Kisses to the Crying Cooks”, from Fast Japanese Spin Cycle. Dude, I really need to rip the rest of my GBV. They’re in my top ten live shows of all time list, why the fuck don’t I listen to them more often. This Bud’s on me.
10 Destroyer “A Dangerous Woman Up to a Point”, from Destroyer’s Rubies. Just about the only kind of music in this genre that I like, a really strong album that will probably end up in my top 20 of the year. So this song is the mp3 for today, just because you should buy this album if you see it.

i gravitated to him because he was tousled and wiry and bad, cruel. he had a reputation for being mean, but i never noticed. i would get off the bus after school, and run home to check in. inevitably, i’d be sitting in my driveway shortly after changing out of school clothes, and he’d appear around the corner on his bicycle, black t-shirt pressing against his slight frame as he pushed up the slope. every day.
we used to go out walking through the neighborhood at dusk, sometimes each with our own set of headphones, letting other kids’ parents wonder what we were up to.
in those days, letting your kids wander around the streets unsupervised wasn’t frowned upon.
i was self-involved, even as a young girl, so i never wondered what he was listening to as we walked, dirty, like two pairs of worn-thin boots.
we’d break from walking at the bright green park bench, our skinned knees grinning around bent joints like rubber hearts.
slouching over our headsets, collapsing onto each other like blades of cut grass in a sidewalk’s pile, one giant mass of legs and arms, whatever we were playing was the soundtrack to that moment, and it was different for each of us.
i imagine a lot of those moments i reflect on now aren’t at all like what he might remember, seeing as how i’d listen to 60 minutes of “gigantic”, and seeing as how his back pocket carried a crumpled and crushed casing for “back in black”;
and seeing as how i loved him.
