Friday Ten, Mixtapes
Weird playlist today, I think iTunes has something against me some days. All great music, but you know, sometimes a song comes on and you’re like “WTF, iTunes? What have I ever done to you?” Yes, it’s been that kind of day with iTunes. Also, last night it was really getting on my nerves, playing so much Mothersbaugh (again, love it, but sometimes it’s almost painful) I finally finished my Mothersbaugh Wedding Soundtrack just to get it all out of my system.
Quickly, before I post the songs: The Shittiest Mix Tape Challenge has exploded, and there are a ton of awesome submissions. I’ve been talking to Debbie (she makes amazing things, go check it out), and I’m going to buy the winner a custom t-shirt from her, the design clearly stating that you are the king or queen of mix tape making. Want a tshirt? Think you can rock a shitty mix tape better than anyone else? Go here, read the ‘rules’, and link me back to your mix. Beware, there are some doozies. There’s no way I’m going to win.
Ok, on to what the mix for this Friday is, since I’m sure you’re on the edge of your fucking seat about it.
01 Superdrag “Cynicality”, from Regretfully Yours. This album has so many great memories for me each time I hear it. I actually stole this CD with a friend, from a … well, let’s just say it was stolen. But I’ve since purchased it legitimately, once for me and once for a friend. So there.
02 Mitch Hedberg “Koalas”, from Strategic Grill Locations. If you never heard any of his stand-up before he passed away, it’s never too late. “My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana, and I said no, but I want a regular banana later, so … yeah.”
03 Voxtrot “Missing Pieces”, from Raised by Wolves. Austin darlings at their best, check it out!
04 Telepopmusik “Animal Man”, from Genetic World. Dreamy, spacey electronic … rap? You’ve heard them in some Cingular commercials, and this song isn’t really representative of their body of work, but hey, it’s a random shuffle.
05 Willie Nelson “If You Could Touch Her at All”, from Greatest Hits. I recently stole this album off a friend’s external hard drive, and this is the first time this song has popped up randomly. One of my favorite Willie songs, and it would have been my mp3 pick if I could stand to share it.
06 The Stone Roses “She Bangs the Drums”, from The Stone Roses. Ah, memories.
07 Tom Petty “Depending on You”, from Full Moon Fever. I just recently ripped a ton of old CDs from a box and a drawer to the external hard drive, and rediscovered all my Tom Petty. I love this song, but lately Wildflowers has really been punching me in the gut.
08 David Grubbs “You’ll Never Tame Me”, from A Guess at the Riddle. I think people either love or hate Grubbs, but if you’re into Jim O’Rourke or any sort of oblique piano arrangements, you’ll like this, too.
09 Guided By Voices “Kisses to the Crying Cooks”, from Fast Japanese Spin Cycle. Dude, I really need to rip the rest of my GBV. They’re in my top ten live shows of all time list, why the fuck don’t I listen to them more often. This Bud’s on me.
10 Destroyer “A Dangerous Woman Up to a Point”, from Destroyer’s Rubies. Just about the only kind of music in this genre that I like, a really strong album that will probably end up in my top 20 of the year. So this song is the mp3 for today, just because you should buy this album if you see it.
