Odds & Ends: Xiu Xiu, Banksy and Misprint

Directed by Corey Smith, Corey Smith Films.
- TAYLOR McKNIGHT talks about Banksy, underground / guerrilla art, and $400,000 art installations.
… the most interesting thing about this line Banksy straddles between being underground (doing these forms of illegal art) and going mainstream (throwing an art show in LA, putting 100k+ price tags on your work and selling them!) is how this will be handled in the future. Will it hurt his edge? Does he care?
I imagine that for the community of artists, it’s a really fine line McKnight refers to. I mean shit, the guy is selling pieces to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, for crying out loud.
Don’t overlook this bit of pure Austin goodness: The “Back to School” edition of MISPRINT MAGAZINE, which featured a special section on ACL and the line-up. A few of my favorite moments:
THE SHINS: It’s too bad their songs have now become the soundtrack to my heartbreaking, yet fictional, soul-searching trip to New Jersey.
That’s exactly how I feel, only my trip was to Arkansas.
GNARLS BARKLEY: The only difference between Gnarls and the Arctic Monkeys is that the former wear ridiculous costumes and the latter wear ridiculous outfits.
This after noting that Gnarls’ first show ever was “in a dirty little club called Coachella”, and wondering how the hell this happens to bands. Well, when your band is Cee Lo and Dangermouse, I guess shit happens. But the Arctic Monkeys comparison is fair, I’d say, considering Gnarls was already a hit with one song … maybe you’ve heard of it?
BEN HARPER: A dude with full sleeve tattoos should really be less of a pussy.
Heh, I don’t care one way or the other about Ben Harper, but that one made me laugh out loud. You should really take the time to read the full issue, or at least the rest of the ACL notes (.pdf), even if you’re not from Austin you’ll enjoy it. I promise. Making fun of things is a sort of universal language - a language of love.
