For writer Rob Sheffield, those tapes are a way to keep alive the memory of his wife, Renee. She died unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism.

His new book Love is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time, tells the story of their relationship in 15 beat-up, old cassettes.

Man, that just reminded me that I once had a wish list. I wonder if it still exists if I haven’t checked on it in the better part of a year?

I am excited about this book, though. Woo.

Sheffield should really keep writing books and really stop being a critic. He’s way better at one than the other.

yeah. and usually if it’s been a long time since you were adding stuff to it, it’s really funny to see what you had added to it before. i had once abandoned a wish list for the better part of two years. when i returned, suffice it to say i found some embarrassing stuff.

what that means is…i can’t remember what was there, but i damn sure cleaned it out quick.
