Flatland, A Romance of Many Dimensions

FlatlandOne of my favorite books, Flatland, is becoming a movie. The 1884 novella by Edwin Abbott Abbott is a love story, a Victorian satire, and a brilliant introduction to the concept of other dimensions. The story follows A. Square, a resident of Flatland (a two dimensional locale) as he tries to understand the meaning of life in such a world. Soon, Square visits Lineland, a one dimensional world, and tries to convince the monarch that there are more dimensions, but fails. He goes on to travel through other worlds, and is eventually imprisoned for preaching about other dimensions, etc. You see the deal.

There have been several movies made, and in 2007 there will be two!

Speaking of cool mathematical ideas, take a minute and watch a video representation of Mobius transformations. Read more about Mobius transformations here.
