More on Guilty Pleasures and/or Liking the Bad
Mike Barthel on Vampire Weekend, but here specifically about the unavoidable goodness of some songs that are undeniably worth disliking:
You can dislike the song–you should dislike the song–but “Candle in the Wind” sold how many fucking copies? It’s reasonable to think people responded so strongly to that song because it powerfully expressed a particular emotion that they related to.
-ClapClap.org (because it reminded me of my thoughts yesterday about this: The Decline of the Guilty Pleasure)
I’ve been on the fence about Vampire Weekend, and I think there’s a lot there that merits discussion, but not a discussion about the band, or even the album. Besides, everything that should be said has been covered by Pretty Goes With Pretty and Marathonpacks (as well as the aforementioned Barthel).
