Mae Shi

1001346.jpgThe new Mae Shi record is fantastic. Listening to it brought on a bit of nostalgia, I pulled out the old Monorchid stuff this morning and took a walk down brutish ’90s D.C. punk rock lane. Monorchid, for those unaware, were a loud, raucous and incredibly under-rated (in terms of general reverence in the independent music community) band that came from the ashes of Circus Lupus and later reformed a bit (with some new folks) as Skull Kontrol. Bastardly, bratty vocals and wiry guitar funneling into spazztastic freakouts (particularly on “7xx7″) best present my comparison.

Anyway, Mae Shi is more glitchy and electronic than Monorchid ever was, but when they play guitars, they fucking rock. I’m not sure why this band even bothers with all the techno / electronica bullshit, they are brutal, angsty and loud — I wish they’d just put out a 8 song, 18 minute LP and called it a day. They’d be my heroes.

They did, it’s called “Heartbeeps.” 10 songs in 15 minutes.

Maybe I should have been more clear: I wish they would have done something like that again for this release, instead of spending a lot of time on the bleeps and bloops. I like the rock.

The debut from Chicha Libre, “Sonido Amazonico” is being released March 25th… it’s Peruvian surf rock circa the ’60’s and ’70’s… played in the here and now by a bunch of New Yawkers who are totally in love with the genre. Are they the next Dengue Fever-ish band? Time and fans will tell.

Would you like to get the press kit with cd or the link to download MP3’s?

I heart all the bleeps and bloops. They certainly can rock out quite well, but I love the old-school ravey sounds on the record too. It’s a weird combo, for sure, but they somehow make it work.

Wow, Paige. You just gave me a total 90s boner when you mentioned the Monorchid.
