Music, One a Day While You're Away

#9: Am I a Good Man?

I love this song because there’s a real question being asked, and though I’ve listened to this tune a lot, I’m never sure if its rhetorical. Am I a good man? Am I a fool? Am I weak? Or am I playing it cool? Soul music’s ability to push hard with driving bass, guitar, oodles of strain and emotion through vocal work all contribute to the greatness of this song, but what’s most remarkable to me, time after time, is that the singer really has no idea if he’s coming or going, not a clue as to what shit he’s trying to pull off with this woman. Classic, incredible soul. Look out for the equally brilliant Helene Smith bringing it together with tremendous back-up contributions.

Them Two “Am I a Good Man?”

Previously: #8: “Bitters End”, #6, #7: “I’m Not the Loving Kind” and “Augustus Pinochet”, #6: “You Left the Water Running”, #5: “My Mathematical Mind”, #4: “Reason to Believe”, #3: “Pastoral”, #2: “Jardim de Infancia”, #1: “Blue Tulip”
