One a Day While You’re Away: Traffic

Lately I’ve been realizing that I’ve completely short-changed Steve Winwood. I have pretty intense memories of being a kid, forced to listen to “Roll With It” in my mom’s Camry repeatedly for at least one full year. Aside from that, I’ve completely shut him out of my music life for 20 years. Thanks to a couple of awesome Traffic songs and the general greatness of the Spencer David Group, I’ve realized my error.
“Something New” is a strange little song. Endlessly upbeat, incredibly pop, and yet pretty sad, it’s a great example of a dense song that doesn’t immediately shout at you. A friend sent it to me on a mix and it’s become one my favorites to pull up when I need a boost, but when I sing along, it gets weird. You’ll see when you listen to it.
