One a Day While You’re Away: DM Stith
DM Stith is one of my favorite discoveries as of late. Despite his brilliance, his label and his general awesomeness, he isn’t discussed as frequently as he should be.
His latest release, Heavy Ghost, is a really dense work; it’s a gorgeous, lush, dark collection of pieces featuring Stith’s unmistakable voice, piano, and a variety of otherworldly sounds. I wish I’d put this album on Kevin’s iPod before the Shearwaters left for Europe – it’s excellent traveling music. It’s best in headphones, but if you’re going to get started I recommend the entire album, not just one track. Listening to Heavy Ghost always gives me that feeling you have when you re-enter sunlight after a really captivating film: it takes a while to leave you, you spend a bit of time dazed and silent. Just incredible.
I featured “Just Once” on my You Look Like a Kitty mixtape, and I’m including a video below. Please do check out his work.
