The Story of Anvil

Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a rock documentary about a failed heavy metal band that started out in the ’80s and at the turn of the century is still trying to rock. Anthony Lane reviewed the film at the New Yorker and it’s really piqued my interest. The film’s typeface, trailer and general tone (a superfan books the tour, the singer is a school cafeteria worker) are steeped in comic tragedy, and I wondered if perhaps director Sacha Gervasi had found his own real life Spinal Tap. Lane seals the deal for me, though, reassuring that there’s an epic sadness, hope and message of undying friendship and devotion beneath the sometimes hilarious failures.

oh, steph

It is so deliciously Canadian. I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats. You’re gonna love it.
