Mixtape: Where Was My Mind, Pts. 1-4

wherewasmymind

For a couple years now, I’ve been saying that I’m going to make some mixes of everything I really loved in the ’90s. I came of age in that decade: discovered classic rock with my dad, went to my first show, fell in love with my first radio station, and became punk rock’s underage love child. This is a four part mix, featuring songs and bands that helped define my formative listening years. Naturally there’s a bunch of stuff I listened to that isn’t here – I’m focusing on the dirty, gritty, pre-emo and loud this time. I cheat just a bit with a couple of softer tunes, but they belong here. Shoe-gazing depression mix comes next. Follow the jump for the rest of the discs.

Have you ever seen Sam McPheeters (Men’s Recovery Project)’s blog? It’s pretty TTTIIIGGGHHHTTT as well: http://loomofruin.blogspot.com/

love the chisel and seam songs SO MUCH. much of the rest of it i am fairly unfamiliar with (except for the dischord stuff, which i discovered later) – it’s safe to say that while i was sad and lonely for the 90s (when i wasn’t listening to jam bands – okay, when i was listening to jam bands, too), i managed to not really get into “angry” music AT ALL. i went straight from the dead to indie/post rock, electronica, and alt-country, bypassing most hip-hop and punk/hardcore along the way. oh well – these should serve as a nice primer. thanks, paige!

ps where’s dahlia seed?

Mi Amor! Best mix yet. This is why I keep coming back.

Incredible amounts of music to consume … thank you for posting this … there are a lot of bands I’ve listened to and some that I haven’t heard of before … I love 90’s music as well … this is a real treat … I’ve loved your previous mixes and look forward to future mixes as well … keep them coming …

What a beast of a mix! I remember dl'ing many of these songs years ago when I used Audiogalaxy. This is definitely a blast into my formative past as well!

[...] has posted a 4-part series of mixtapes that documents her initial forays into music – aptly titled ‘Where Was My Mind?‘. I can’t begin to explain how incredible her coverage of this period of hardcore/punk/emo is. [...]

nice. Good call on the CFD. Could’a used some Giants Chair, though!

stumbled across yr blog via several RTs using the twitter machine (“if architects had to work like web designers”).

thanks for posting these fantastic mixtapes! the music & ethos of this particular era were profoundly influential on me. bands as diverse as crimpshrine, heroin and christie front drive somehow make total sense to me being on the same mixtape.

maybe you can add a special bonus tape (a cassingle, perhaps?) including max colby & swing kids!
