85: Guided By Voices’ Bee Thousand (1994)

2082

Dayton, Ohio’s favorite ex-school teacher turned uber-prolific recording artist, Robert Pollard, churned out plenty of albums that sounded a bit like this one before this one appeared, but Bee Thousand actually caught the attention of other music geeks, not just the ones in Pollard’s basement. “Hot Freaks” aside, I’ll always argue that Bee is the most cohesive and worthwhile GBV effort, worthy of all the attention, and well worth the attention it takes to appreciate their sound.

lol I don’t like “Hot Freaks” either, but they would play it live every time I ever saw them to huge roars of approval.

having a favorite GBV record is kind of like having a favorite ice cream flavor…i’ve always been partial to “Alien Lanes”/pistachio.

This is true, and I may be in a the tinyest of minorities around by loving the last two albums the most (as albums, anyway… many of my favorite songs come from earlier albums). Earthquake Glue / rocky road and Half-Smiles of the Decomposed / lemon creme.

Also, I love that your post is all about Robert Pollard and then you share a Tobin Sprout song as the taster mp3. Balls, Paige. Balls!
