69: Moss Icon’s Lyburnum (1994)
This record is one of the first that had a real impact on me, along with Out of Step and whatever Smiths song I heard first. Some part of me was born for this late ’80s early ’90s emo shit … I’m always walking some thin line between the loudest, most obnoxious shit out there and the most serene. I put prepared piano on mixtapes with hardcore noise, for cryin’ out loud. Here we find Tonie Joy (Born Against, Universal Order of Armageddon) early in his career, mourning Native Americans and liberation run amok. In July 2008, Moss Icon was named one of the “23 Bands Who Shaped Punk” by Alternative Press magazine. There is apparently hope of a reunion, but we’ll see.
