Watching Brighton Rock

I haven’t read Graham Greene’s book by the same name, but last night we watched Brighton Rock and really enjoyed it. Sam Riley (also from Control) was amazing as a hard-to-read young crime boss-hopeful in Brighton. Working to keep the people who know about his crimes under control, he takes in a sad young teen who knows too much and (maybe) falls in love. Motives and unanswered questions rule the film, but even if you don’t feel satisfied with how you read their actions you can marvel and the beauty of the film. Just gorgeous and a real nail-biter.

  1. Forgot that this film existed – thanks for the reminder. The book is excellent and cruel. There’s also another film version from many decades ago, which is also great.
