Plugins & Geekery

3206127352_d25b3191f3I use a variety of WordPress plugins on this site. Here’s what’s currently in play, and a short list of things I’m working on.

Adsense Manager: I’ve only recently started using Adsense to attempt to monetize this site (subtly, and more as of an experiment than an additional source of income), but this busty plugin makes it easy to work within the WP interface. Control and arrange your AdSense & Referral blocks on your WordPress blog. With Widget and inline post support, configurable colours. By Martin Fitzpatrick.

Askimet: Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use it. You can review the spam it catches under “Comments.” To show off your Akismet stats just put < ?php akismet_counter(); ?> in your template. See also: WP Stats plugin. By Matt Mullenweg.

All In One SEO Pack: Another new one. Out-of-the-box SEO for your WordPress blog.

Contact Form: A really simple contact form plugin. By Takayuki Miyoshi.

Flickr RSS: The classic, sturdy and totally reliable way to display your images on your blog. Allows you to integrate the photos from a flickr rss feed into your site. By Dave Kellam and Stefano Verna.

Google Analytics: This plugin makes it simple to add Google Analytics to your WordPress blog and/or your BBPress forum. By Rich Boakes.

Header Image Rotator: Displays a new header image in your blog based on different time variables. Simply create a folder called wp-contents/header-images/ and add as many picures as your heart desires. By Matthew Hough.

Inline RSS: This is the tool I use to display my Del.icio.us links and my Lastfm recent plays. Allows inline RSS feeds from any source in any format (hopefully). Click here to edit the sources and here to edit the xslt file. Usage in templates: inlineRSS(‘feedname’); Usage in posts / pages Feed feedname not found . This flavour uses multiple processing engines. By Cal Demaine.

Lastfm Artists: Pretty displays of artist photos from Lastfm. Last.fm Artists shows images of your top or recently listened to artists. By Gary Fenstamaker.

Sitemap Generator: Generates a fully customizable sitemap By Dagon Design. Seen here.

XML Sitemap: This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO. Configuration Page By Arne Brachhold.

Snazzy Archives: Snazzy Archives is a visualization plugin for your WordPress site which creates completely unique archive pages. By Vladimir Prelovac. Seen here.

Maintenance Mode: Adds a splash page to your blog that lets visitors know your blog is down for maintenance. Logged in administrators get full access to the blog including the front-end. Navigate to Settings ? Maintenance Mode to get started. By Michael Wöhrer.

Post-plugin Library: Does nothing by itself but supplies common code for the Similar Posts, Recent Posts, Random Posts, and Recent Comments plugins. Make sure you have the latest version of this plugin. By Rob Marsh, SJ.

Random Posts: You see this on individual post pages in the left column. More fun that related posts. Displays a highly configurable list of randomly selected posts. Instructions and help online. Requires the latest version of the Post-Plugin Library to be installed. By Rob Marsh, SJ.

Referer Bouncer: Bounce referer spammers back to their own sites. The plugin comes with a list of default sites. However you can modify the referer.txt file to add/remove your referer’s(requires that the file is first created either manually or through a link provided later). Do not leave any empty lines or extra spaces in the file. If you have not manually created a file called referer.txt in wp-content directory then you can create it here. This creates an empty file. Unless you add some referer data to it (one per line) no filtering will be done. Creating this files disables the default filter list. You can reset to the default filter list by either deleting this file or copying the default filter list to this file. After you are done with creating/deleting the referer.txt file you *must* disable the links to create and delete the referer file to prevent outsiders from accessing these functions. You can still modify it as before(if it has already been created before). To re-enable creating/deleting referer.txt you must manually delete nrsetup.txt file in wp-content directory. Shadowbox-JS: A javascript media viewer similar to Lightbox and Thickbox. Supports all types of media, not just images. By Matt Martz.

Tubepress: As seen on my videos page. Displays gorgeous YouTube galleries in your posts, pages, and/or sidebar. Please visit http://tubepress.org for more info! By Eric D. Hough.
